The Dell Inspiron Mini 9 spots a small, virtually weightless design which allows you to travel light while keeping up on the internet. It measures 232 mm x 27.2 mm x 172 mm (W x H x D) in dimension and weighs approximately 2.28 lbs.

The Dell Inspiron Mini 9 is outfitted with ruggedized solid state drives that are whisper quiet, power friendly and durable. In addition to that, the Dell Inspiron Mini 9 is able to provide over 4 hours of battery life while keeping the weight of the system under 2.3 pounds. It utilizes an Intel Atom Processor (1.6 GHz, 512 KB L2 Cache, 533 MHz FSB) and a genuine Windows XP Home Edition SP3 operating system. In terms of memory, it has up to 1 GB on 533 MHz DDR2 SDRAM, as well as up to 16 GB configured with a Solid State drive.

As far as an elegant small laptop goes the Asus EEE PC S101 is up there with the best and it’s sleek design is suited for male or female users. This ultrathin model resembles Mac Book Air and its originality comes from unusual colour of the cover. The colour of the S101 can be described as being somewhere between brass and coffee. The palm rest, or area around the touchpad, is made of brushed aluminum and besides its elegant looks it is easy to maintain this surface. Interestingly the hinges of the display are decorated with Swarovski crystals on each side. But this detail isn’t too noticeable so male users won’t get their macho image compromised, and its something that female users would certainly appreciate.

The matte 10.2 inch display has the usual resolution for a panel of this size but the viewing angles are not as we expected from a model of this price range. Since the cover cannot be opened to degree like most netbooks can and in combination with poor viewing angles, this is a small laptop that won’t have a perfect picture on all occasions. For a product in this in this range only the best is expected.

Because the ASUS Eee PC S101 is very thin, the VGA and network connectors had to be places at the back end of the laptop which we find to be more practical. This model doesn’t have a modem but has plenty of connectors – besides mentioned LAN and VGA it has three USB 2.0 connectors and two audio jacks (Headphone/OUT and Microphone/IN).

The touch pad supports gestures so you can use more than one finger to achieve results. Keys below the touchpad for left and right click are made as one key and this is a design feature which some users may not like. When pressure is applied to the centre of this key nothing happens but it is hard to determine where exactly the left click end and the right click begins on the touch pad key. Keyboard is good and without any noticeable bending.

In a line-up of unusual features that ASUS Eee PC S101 has, one has stand out. Most new features are oriented toward external design and looks but interesting feature is that there is a button on this model that has unusual function for a netbook: it raises frequency of Atom CPU from 1.6 to 1.68 GHz. This overclock is more symbolical than functional but it is very interesting option. Even when the CPU is overclocked, the S101 is just slightly warmer on bottom than most other netbooks.

Since ASUS Eee PC S101 is a high-end model nothing less than SSD is suited for it. Reading performances are more than double of performances of older models. This is really nice result that can be noticed in real working conditions. Since 16GB or capacity is for most users too small, ASUS provided additional storage capacity with one 16GB SDHC card.

The battery life is also excellent for a laptop of this size. Its six cells can provide really nice autonomy that can achieve even 5 hours usage in case you use netbook just for typing while display brightness is set to lower levels.

Apple take the design of their latest laptop into new frontiers with the launch of the new Apple Mac Airbook. The distinct design sets it apart from the rest of the small laptop market. Thinnest, lightest and yet the strongest is what describes the best of the new Mac Air Book. “Whether to or not to – take your laptop with you” – the usual dilemma is a thing of bygone days with the ultra slim Mac Air Book weighing just about 3.0-3.4 pounds and 0.76 inch thick. It comes along with an Aluminium chassis which is much more fingerprint resistant than the usual standard Macbooks. Apart from it the aluminium body lends the Air book a very sturdy and robust construction much in line with the kind of games Apple engineers likes to play with any of their products.

The 13.3 inch display, fitted with a built-in iSight camera, mic and an LED-backlit display has certainly taken the innovations in laptops to a new level. The LED-backlit display is controlled by the ambient light sensor which automatically adjusts the screen brightness in response to the light in the room. The apple trackpad has also got quite a facelifts.The new Air book’s trackpad measures 5 inches diagonally making it comparatively larger than any of the Mac book’s trackpads and has features that lets you use three fingers rather than the usual two fingers.

This multi-touch gestures enables the user to go forward and back within their Web browser history, and just like zoom-in and zoom-out features in the iPhone, one can do the same with Mac Air Book.

Not everything is a ‘wow’ with the new Mac Air Book. Shortcomings identified are WiFi with very limited connectivity much slower than other Macbooks; standard hard drive of 80GB with the base and additional option of 64GB SSD hard drive at very expensive price.

The single USB jack slot is yet another big limiting factor for people who frequently prefer to use more than one USB device simultaneously. The design of The Airbook is revolutionary, aesthetically appealing and targeted to only a segmented niche of laptop users willing to shell out extra bucks for something that’s scarce. But, certainly scoring low with people who wouldn’t like to pay for something that doesn’t deliver much beyond a pleasant experience just to the eyes.
