Netbooks vs Tablets

Small laptops and netbooks offer many features that the average notebook or tablet doesn’t. Despite the boom of the tablets like the iPad, netbooks possess capabilities which just aren’t available on the Apple or Android tablets. Below we have put together some reasons to still opt for a netbook over a tablet or a larger notebook laptop.

Netbooks offer so much more portability over conventional notebooks. With a screen size of approximately 10 inches, the netbook is more than 5 inches smaller than the average laptop. This makes them lighter and much easier to carry. The portability means that they can be taken with you anywhere.

Many people state that tablets are more portable than a netbook as they are even lighter and easier to carry. While this is true, many people now carry various accessories with their tablets such as external keyboards and speakers. The netbook offers all of these in one device.

When comparing with a tablet pc, netbooks provide you with the ability to type documents and carry out word processing tasks quickly and effectively. Tablets don’t have the luxury of a keyboard and typing on a touchscreen can often be difficult. Spreadsheets and presentations require a PC rather than a touchscreen, perfect for students and netbooksprofessionals alike.

Higher resolution displays
Netbooks are able to reach 1366 x768 resolutions as opoosed to the 1024 x 768 resolution on most tablets.

Superior battery life

The battery life on the majority of netbooks matches or exceeds the life of large netbooks, this is because of their low power consumption. Many netbooks can easily provide a battery life which exceeds 8 hours. The battery life of most tablet PCs are much less than netbooks and with a netbook you can easily carry a spare battery thus providing twice the life.

Full flash support
Apple products don’t offer flash support so you are unable to watch flash video on the iPads. Android tablets do offer this capability however. This is not a problem that netbook owners face as all are compatible with flash video.

One of the main advantages of netbooks over tablets is their superior processor which means that they can perform multiple tasks at the same time and run a number of applications at once. Although tablets are able to run more than one piece of software at a time they often hang when a few applications are running simultaneously

All small laptops come with Ethernet port, multiple USB ports, and even HDMi ports allowing you to easily connect to a television or monitor.

Netbooks can always be beefed up too and memory or hard drive space can be easily increased to improve capacity or performance. With the iPad and Android tablets, expansion capabilities are extremely limited and in most cases can’t be altered.

The biggest advantage that the netbook has over its tablet and notebook competitors is price. With significantly cheaper prices and superior performance over tablets, the netbook only gets beaten by the tablet’s appeal as a fashion accessory. In tougher economic times, the reasons to go for a netbook over a tablet prove that overall the small laptop is a better buy.

Acer have rebranded a number of their netbooks under the name of eMachines and their latest offering the eMachines E355 is proving to be one of their big sellers and contender for the best small laptop title.

The Acer build quality is evident as soon as you open the box, the neat matte finish looks stylish and avoids fingerprint marking. The 10.1 inch display is impressive, with colours looking clear and bright. The graphics are powered by the netbook’s Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 3150 and watching movies or video is crisp and smooth.

What we really liked was the thickness, at just 1 inch the netbook proves to be compact and thin as well as still being extremely sturdy. Clearly Acer have learnt experience from their previous efforts at producing small laptops. For users who are on the go, this netbook will be the perfect solution.

The keyboard is set up well and is easy to type on, with gaps between each key, good for people with larger fingers. The touchpad comes with multi gesture technology, allowing you to scroll up and down and zoom in and out of apps using the pinch functionality.emachines e355

The netbook comes powered by the Intel Atom N455 processor, a standard in the majority of small laptops. The eMachines E355 also has a whopping 250 GB hard drive, allowing you to store plenty of music and video.

Battery life is a little bit disappointing in comparison to other netbooks available on the market. The maximum life available is around 4 hours which is below average.

Sony continue their production of high quality products with the stylish Sony Vaio M Series. This netbook series has proved to be a huge seller already and the M13M1E is the biggest of them all. This small laptop is elegant yet simple to use and packed with high spec components.

The first thing to notice on this laptop is the LED display. The screen picture proves to be extremely sharp and of high quality so despite the 10.1 inch screen, so watching movies and videos on this laptop is not an eye sore.

The Sony Vaio M13M1E comes with a 250GB hard drive, a standard now amongst most netbooks so plenty of room for storing a large number of files. This small laptop has an Intel Atom 1.83 GHz processor and coupled with Windows 7, all of its features can be handled easily. Accessing the internet and being able to handle multiple programs becomes effortless.

The smooth finish makes this an elegant machine and the netbook does not become covered with finger prints easily. The netbook comes with a built in wecbcam allowing you to carry out video calls effortlessly.

The only thing we would suggest would be considering a RAM upgrade after purchasing this small laptop. This will give the laptop the ability to respond even quicker than it does already. We were also slightly unimpressed with the built in speakers, the sound quality proves to be lacking slightly.

Overall this is one of the best netbooks available on the market and as usual Sony have produced another high quality product which will rival any of its competitors.

HP Mini 210

Price: Approximately £250
Size: 10.1 inches
Weight: 1.34 kg
Battery Life: Over 8 hours
Processor Speed: Intel Atom N455 1.66 GHz
Hard Drive: 250 GB

HP have opted to give their netbooks a facelift and have now re-entered the market with the HP Mini 210. The immediate appeal is the excellent colours HP have provided, with colours on the bottom side as well as the lid. This helps to give the laptop a great finish and makes it very appealing looks wise.

The laptop is sturdy as well, the screen and keyboard are protected well by the outer shell. The other excellent feature is that upgrading components in this small laptop is very easy. A panel at the back of the netbook can be removed and memory and hard drive upgrades become extremely simple. We found this to be a very good feature as most other machines require the removal of many screws. This can be done witgh only the use of your hand.

Read Buyer Reviews on HP Mini 210

The screen in the HP Mini 210 is of good quality and the picture is of a decent standard. Some versions offer a 1366 x 768 display capabilities on the glossy 10.1 inch screen, this allows windows to be displayed properly and avoids excessive scrolling.

The speakers on the HP Mini 210 are of a very average quality, many other netbooks on the market provide better sound levels.

This small laptop has a 93% Chiclet keyboard. The first thing you realise is how easy it is to type with little feeling of being cramped. This makes the netbook feel like a normal laptop. The machine also comes with 3 USB 2.0 ports, audio, Ethernet as well as a SDHC card slot and webcam. The HP is slightly lacking when it comes to connectivity with only 802.11bg wireless.

A unique feature about the HP Mini 210 is the absence of any buttons on the touchpad. Instead the manufacturers have opted for a touchpad. Unfortunately we found that using the touchpad can cause problems with unwanted scrolling and pointer movement.

The battery life on this laptop is a definite plus, with over 8 hours of battery life available.

Overall the HP Mini 210 is a good competitor in the market, aesthetically pleasing, this netbook has helped to bring HP back into the fold.

Samsung N310

Price: Approximately £300
Size: 10.1 inches
Weight: 1.23 kg
Battery Life: over 5 Hours
Processor Speed: 1.6 GHz
Hard Drive: 160 GB

Small Laptops Guide have carried out all the hard work for YOU in finding recommended, secure, online retailers at the best prices. We provide a variety of sellers so you can compare prices. Simply click on the product image below to buy now.

The Samsung N310 small laptop has been designed by award winning designer Nato Fukasawa to have a smooth and rounded design like that of a pebble and in many respects he’s done exactly that. You won’t find any edges to the N310, which goes completely against the design laid out in the previous Samsung NC10.

It’s not only the shape that’s different, for as soon as you open the lid you’ll find the netbook has a two-tone effect- our review unit having a blue outer shell with a black liner.

The 10.1-inch screen has a frameless design and looks amazing. It has a native resolution of 1024 x 600 pixels but a neat Samsung app allows you to change it on the fly to 1024 x 768 pixels – perfect for watching movies in 16:9 aspect

The keyboard has been given an overhaul as well as uses Samsung’s latest design, as seen on the likes of the Samsung X360 laptop, where the keys are forced through the body of the device. This helps add space and rigidity to the keys. It’s an amazing keyboard for the size, which is almost full-size, and incredibly easy to use.

When it comes to specification, you’ll find the N310 small laptop is pretty much what we’ve come to expect from a netbook. So you’ll find Windows XP ticking away quite nicely on the Intel Atom N270 processor. There is a single SODIMM of memory that Samsung has made easily accessible so can easily be upgraded to 2GB at some later date. The 160GB hard drive is also standard of this type of machine.

Extra features come in the form of 802.11n wireless LAN, while Bluetooth also makes a welcome appearance. There are the now customary three USB ports, as well as VGA-out and Ethernet, the latter of which has a protective cover as if suggesting you won’t use it that much.

Laptops Ratings

As part of our growing intention to provide an unbiased informational website with regards to netbooks, Small Laptops Guide have added a new laptops rating system to every page within the website. At the top of every page are ten stars and a rating out of ten. This rating system has been added so that users who visit us are able to give their own opinions on the latest small laptops on the market. This means that YOU are able to share your opinion with the World on any of the laptops we have reviewed. Maybe you disagree, maybe you have an opinion to add, our new laptops ratings system allows you to share your thoughts.

At the top of each page you can see 10 yellow stars and below that an overall rating based on user generated clicks. By clicking on the relevant number of stars, you are able cast your vote and decide on the rating of the particular small laptop mentioned on the page. So for example, if you have used a particular laptop and have thought it was awful, a really bad machine, and would not recommend it to anyone, then a low rating would be appropriate. If however, the laptop was the best you had ever used and you wanted to let everyone know, then a high rating would be the way to go. Over the course of time, with many users adding their own opinion, we hope to provide a fair rating of the particular laptop.

When many sites carry out their system of laptop ratings, they will be adding a rating based on a review of a laptop. But how long have they used the netbook for when carrying out the review? An hour? A day? It’s difficult to say. Often they get the machine for 2 weeks, but even then this may not be enough to realise all issues. Only prolonged use gives you a full idea of whether the laptop computer is worth the money you paid for or not. Actual owners of a small laptop, who have spent their own hard earned money on a machine are able to provide impartial and unbiased reviews.

When providing a small laptops rating, try to think about factors of the pc which appeal to you:
Is it worth the money?
How easy is the laptop to carry?
Is the keyboard easy to type with?
Does the small laptop have enough memory and a big enough hard drive?
Does the small laptop have a good battery life?

All these factors help to determine an overall rating of a laptop and give you a final rating. It’s good to share this with others so they can use the benefit of your knowledge. As well as providing laptop ratings, it’s also a good idea to provide your own review. The comments section on each page allows users to provide their own reviews. Even a few short lines can be helpful and can assist users in determining whether a laptop is worth buying or not. Look to try and be honest and provide info on both what’s good or bad about a particular small laptop. Remember, commenting only takes a few seconds but can ultimately help people save money or make sure they spend it wisely.
