REVIEW

HP have opted to give their netbooks a facelift and have now re-entered the market with the HP Mini 210. The immediate appeal is the excellent colours HP have provided, with colours on the bottom side as well as the lid. This helps to give the laptop a great finish and makes it very appealing looks wise.

The laptop is sturdy as well, the screen and keyboard are protected well by the outer shell. The other excellent feature is that upgrading components in this small laptop is very easy. A panel at the back of the netbook can be removed and memory and hard drive upgrades become extremely simple. We found this to be a very good feature as most other machines require the removal of many screws. This can be done witgh only the use of your hand.

Read Buyer Reviews on HP Mini 210

The screen in the HP Mini 210 is of good quality and the picture is of a decent standard. Some versions offer a 1366 x 768 display capabilities on the glossy 10.1 inch screen, this allows windows to be displayed properly and avoids excessive scrolling.

The speakers on the HP Mini 210 are of a very average quality, many other netbooks on the market provide better sound levels.

This small laptop has a 93% Chiclet keyboard. The first thing you realise is how easy it is to type with little feeling of being cramped. This makes the netbook feel like a normal laptop. The machine also comes with 3 USB 2.0 ports, audio, Ethernet as well as a SDHC card slot and webcam. The HP is slightly lacking when it comes to connectivity with only 802.11bg wireless.

A unique feature about the HP Mini 210 is the absence of any buttons on the touchpad. Instead the manufacturers have opted for a touchpad. Unfortunately we found that using the touchpad can cause problems with unwanted scrolling and pointer movement.

The battery life on this laptop is a definite plus, with over 8 hours of battery life available.

Overall the HP Mini 210 is a good competitor in the market, aesthetically pleasing, this netbook has helped to bring HP back into the fold.

REVIEW

We’re big fans of the Samsung range of netbooks, as the Samsung NC10 and its follow-up, the Samsung N110, truly define what a netbook could and should be. So, can this latest version, the Samsung N130, really live up to expectations? Check out our review of the Samsung N130 and find out for yourself…

The first thing you notice about the Samsung N130 is that is has a more rounded design than previous models, so you won’t find any sharp edges just a smooth edge that feels good to the touch. This styling isn’t only on the outer case but also on the inside.

This styling makes the Samsung N130 feel solid to the touch and while we don’t think it as robust as the Samsung N140, for example, it’s a good value offering.

There isn’t a great deal that’s unique about the Samsung N130. It uses the now standard 10.1-inch screen with a clear 1024 x 600-pixel display. Samsung has used a matt finish to the screen, which helps keep the price down and reduces glare when using it out and about. However, we did find that it had a reduced brightness range compared to other netbooks.

The screen size allows for a typical 93 per cent full-size keyboard that we found a pleasure to use. Sure, it takes a little getting accustomed to but the keys have a good degree of travel and the overall quality is high.

When it comes to spec, you’ll find the standard Intel Atom N270 in place, along with 1024MB of memory and 160GB hard drive. Three USB ports, VGA-out, Ethernet and SD memory card reader make up the connections on the sides.

You won’t find Bluetooth onboard but Wi-Fi is present. Samsung is pitching this device as an entry-level model, so it’s a cheaper netbook than other Samsung’s in the range.

When it comes to battery life, we found the Samsung N130 could muster just over four hours, which is less than we expect from a high-end netbook but for this budget offering, it’s more than acceptable.

REVIEW
Acer has launched a Ferrari branded netbook called the Ferrari One hoping to appeal to racing fans on a budget. This small laptop is one of the most stylish on the market, and its performance matches the Italian supercar it’s named after.

Coming in the Ferrari racing red the model will feature a 11.6-inch high-definition 1366×768 pixel resolution, ultra-thin and light form factor, true-cinematic aspect ratio (16:9) Acer CineCrystal LED LCD display for true HD entertainment driven by VISION technology from AMD and support for simultaneous multi-window viewing via Acer GridVista.acer-ferrari-one

According to Acer the Ferrari One speakers are specially engineered to optimize an enhanced audio quality thanks to some help from Dolby Laboratory. In reality that means you get Dolby Home Theater v3.

Rather that pack it with an Intel Atom processor, Acer has turned to AMD and its VISION technology, the AMD Athlon X2 Dual-Core Processor L310. Graphics come in the guise of the ATiRadeon HD 3200 Graphics card.

Elsewhere you’ll get 4GB of DDR2 667MHZ system memory, 64bit Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium or Windows 7 and 160GB hard drive. Wireless 802.11n, Bluetooth and a webcam complete the package.

Best Small Laptop

Here at Small Laptops Guide, we are often asked which is the best small laptop? With so many small laptops and netbooks on the market nowadays, answering this question can become difficult. All the big manufacturers have now added their own machine into the equation and finding the right one can be confusing. We hope our free advice will help in your decision making.

The best small laptop is always going to be different for each person based on various criteria. Usually the most important is price. Small laptops range from as low as £100 and some are over £1,000. Does this mean you have to spend £1,000 to get the best small laptop? The answer is no. From our experience the best all round netbooks are in the £250 – £350 price range. Check reviews on a machine before you buy. On the menu on the left we have added the top ten latest small laptops. This is a carefully hand picked list based on our testing of the machines listed. We would advise any small laptop buyer to check the machines on this list and read our review of each pc.

We have added the latest small laptops to our shop so feel free to visit and check. Size and weight are also factors to consider. The size of netbook screens varies from machine to machine usually ranging from 7 inches to 11 inches. Personal preference will determine what size will suit you as some people find using a 7 inch machine to be difficult. Weight is usually around 1kg. Look out for reviews mentioning the keyboard, how easy is typing? are the keys laid out well in the space available? Battery Life is also another specification which should be taken into account. The best small laptops have a battery life of over 5 hours. This gives users plenty of time to carry out the tasks they want without having to find a plug point. Think about where you intend to use the netbook before you buy and whether power points will be easily accessible.

When looking at the specifications look for small laptops with more than 1GB of RAM and as large a hard drive as possible. Many now come with over 60GB as standard. The best small laptops all feature the Intel Atom Processor as standard so look out for this. Additional features such as webcam and colour should also be considered. Check the operating system as well before buying, the majority have Windows XP as standard although a number of machines are also loaded with Ubuntu Linux. Linux machines are often listed at a cheaper price. Small Laptops Guide would advise looking for a machine which covers all the above citeria, and you will be happy to know there are some we would highly recommend, purely for the fact that they can be classed as “the best small laptop”.

Lets discuss the options below, clicking on the name will take you to the corresponding page review.

1) Acer Aspire One The Acer Aspire One is our favourite small laptop. Coming packed with good spec, battery life, size, and price, the Acer Aspire One is a 5 star rating machine.

2) MSI Wind
The MSI Wind proves to be a good contender for the best small laptop crown based on its price. The MSI Wind is not only affordable and sleek, but also comes with good hard drive size and RAM memory.

3) Compaq 702
Another great netbook, the Compaq 702 is only let down by a battery life which is lower than its competitors.

Dell Inspiron Mini 10

ESSENTIAL SPECS
Price: Approximately £300
Size: 10.1 inches
Weight: 1.3 kg
Battery Life: 4 Hours
Processor Speed: 1.3 GHz
Hard Drive: 120 GB / 160 GB
RAM: 1GB DDR2 SDRAM.

REVIEW
Dell has hit its stride with the Inspiron Mini 10 – it takes the basic design of the smaller Inspiron Mini 9 and adds a larger 10.1-inch screen. This results is a larger, more comfortable netbook to use. What’s more, it even manages to offer more in the way of battery life.

We took the Dell Inspiron Mini 10 for a spin, see how we got on with our review…

One of the problems we had with the Dell Inspiron Mini 9 was its size – Dell simply tried to cram too much I to too little space. So, the arrival of the Inspiron Mini 10 resolves most of this problem. You’ll find the build quality is still has high but the larger screen means that everything has more space.

dell mini 10It has the same design look as the smaller version but with a 10.1-inch screen that delivers a 1024 x 600-pixel resolution, you feel as though you are getting more for your money.

The larger screen allows for a more comfortable keyboard, which is a great choice if you plan to write long documents on your netbook. The keys have a great feel and are firmly mounted on the chassis. It’s a close call as to whether the keyboard is as good as the Asus Eee PC 1000HE, and also matches that of the Samsung NC10.

When it comes to performance, you’ll find this machine chugging along with the same spec of most other netbooks. So, the processor is an Intel Atom Z520, which runs at 1.33GHz and with 1024MB of memory you’ll find the Windows XP operating system runs reasonably well. The hard drive on our review unit packed in 160GB of storage space.

We found that we could run a couple of apps on the Mini 10 quite successfully but things start to slow down if you try to do anything too number-crunchy.

Extra features remain the same, so you’ll find three USB ports, 802,11g Wi-Fi, SD card slot and a 1.3-megapixel webcam. All of which add up to a decent, all round netbook.

The Dell Inspiron Mini 10 is a cracking little netbook. This has been made possible due to the range of colours on offer. We like the newly tweaked design and with a larger keyboard than the Mini 9, this is certainly the best Dell Mini we’ve seen.

REVIEW

HP’s Compaq Mini 702EA is the company’s latest netbook and follows in the footsteps of the impressive Mini-Note 2133, offering the same excellent keyboard and rounded design, but this time with Intel components.
The design of this small laptop has changed slightly, with black and glossy patterned plastics that replace the brushed aluminium finish of its predecessor. The shiny lid attracts fingerprints, but it’s still sturdier and more attractive than most netbooks.

Along with the excellent quality, it also boasts a light weight of 1.2kg, so you’ll be able to take it compaq 702 netbookwith you wherever you go.

The 10.2-inch screen features the same 1024 x 600-pixel resolution as most of its rivals. The bezel around the screen is slightly smaller, however, which gives this small laptop a more compact appearance.

The display has a glossy coating, and colours are brilliantly vivid. Unfortunately, the effect is less impressive when on the move, as it’s one of the most reflective panels we’ve seen. This can be countered by turning the brightness up, although battery life is affected as a result.

The keyboard is one of the best we’ve seen on any of the latest small laptops, with keys that are larger than many full-sized laptops and all of which are responsive and firmly attached, which makes typing a pleasure.

Unfortunately, the touchpad lets the design down, proving shallow and featuring buttons on either side rather than below. It’s usable, but is awkward and takes some getting used to.

Where HP’s first netbook featured a low-powered Via processor, this machine features an Intel Atom chip. Rather than Windows Vista, it also uses the less resource-heavy Windows XP. This allows the 702EA to boot and shut down rapidly, and it only suffers from lag when running several applications simultaneously.

We also managed to get just over three hours of use from a single charge – a reasonable result for the slimline 3-cell battery.
