Samsung’s NC10 raised the bar in the netbook category by providing one of the most usable keyboards and more than 6 hours of battery life. But like all 10-inch netbooks, its smaller form factor had limitations when compared with full-size notebooks. Enter the newest member of the NC family, the Samsung NC20.

This machine has a more spacious 12-inch display and a full-size keyboard, which makes it look more like a traditional notebook than any other netbook to date. Other than its screen size, the biggest difference between the NC20 and other netbooks is that this one is powered by VIA’s Nano U2250 processor and Chrome9 HC3 integrated graphics, as opposed to Intel’s Atom CPU and integrated graphics.

The NC20 is not as powerful or thin as premium ultraportables, but it provides adequate performance and a good deal for those willing to pay extra for a bigger screen and keyboard. The Samsung NC20 shares the NC10’s design. Its rounded lid sports an identical matte cover. Surrounding the edges of the netbook is a silver trim complemented with glowing blue and reddish orange status lights on the front edge, which project a futuristic aura. A blue glowing power button is on the rounded right hinge.

The Samsung NC20 is larger than other 12-inch systems—including its closest competitor, the Dell Inspiron Mini 12—and higher-end 12-inch ultraportables such as the Lenovo ThinkPad X200. At 11.5 x 8.5 x 1.2 inches, the NC20 is thicker than the Mini 12 by 0.4 inches. It is also heavier than your average 2.8-pound netbook, tipping the scales at 3.4 pounds with its standard six-cell battery. While we couldn’t toss this machine into a purse as with the NC10, the NC20 slid into a shoulder bag without a problem. The expanded chassis allows the NC20 to house a full-size keyboard, up from the 93 percent–size keyboard on the NC10; however, the touch and feel of the keys are the same on both. The raised keys provide nice tactile feedback and were comfortable for long typing stints, and there are no spacing issues like those of many netbooks on the market: the right Shift key is full size and directly below the Enter key.

However, we were puzzled as to why Samsung decided to keep the arrow keys and the function keys slightly smaller than the rest, given the extra space on the deck. Also renovated is the touchpad, a marked improvement over the trackpad on the NC10. The mouse button, while longer, remains a single rocker bar and lacks a divot to separate the left and right sides.

The scrolling bar was useful for moving through long Web pages. The NC20 houses the same ports as the NC10, including three USB 2.0 ports, a 3-in-1 memory card reader, mic and headphone jacks, a VGA port, and an Ethernet port. We would have liked to see the extra space used to accommodate an ExpressCard slot for adding a mobile broadband modem card and/or an HDMI port.

With over 20 machines available, it’s fair to say the netbook party is in full swing, but it’s still missing one or two of the big players. Toshiba is no longer one of them, having recently launched the NB100, and it’s definitely a case of better late than never. The NB100 is an 8.9-inch Netbook weighing in at 1.1kg, and looks little larger than the diminutive Eee PC. Where the Eee, and many of its compatriots, look toy-like – earning scorn from those with shiny and ultra-expensive ultraportables – the tiny Toshiba looks like a bona-fida miniature laptop.

The back of the screen is glossy black – look very closely and you’ll see it features subtle flecks of blue. The inside of the machine is a mix of matt black plastics with gun-metal grey highlights. The overall look is simple, and similar in style to larger Toshiba laptops. Part of the reason it looks better than most netbooks is because the display stretches right to the edges of the surrounding plastics – where many of its rivals feature thick and unsightly bezels around their screens.

The panel itself is excellent. The 1024 x 600 pixel resolution is standard for a netbook, but at the lower end of the size spectrum it’s perfectly adequate. The panel features a glossy finish which results in vibrant and deep colours, helped by LED backlighting.

Unsurprisingly considering the NB100’s size, the keyboard is a love it or loath it affair. It’s small, similar in style to the original Eee PC 701′s, but a little bit easier to use. Those with large hands should definitely try it first, but once you get accustomed to it it’s no worse than most netbooks.
The touchpad takes up most of the space beneath the keyboard, leaving little space for the mouse buttons. They’re predictably small, but we didn’t have any problem with them. The pad itself is ultra-responsive, making the most of its teeny dimensions. Toshiba has also crammed in a scroll bar on the right, and the whole lot works really rather well.

One of the most impressive features is the interface – provided you opt for the Linux OS rather than Windows XP. Those willing to abandon their prejudices about Linux, and the geektastic connotations, will find a comprehensive suite of built-in applications, all compatible with the software you’re already accustomed to. PDFs, Word, Excel and PowerPoint files can all be accessed with ease, and it represents huge value for money in comparison to the more expensive XP model.

The Toshiba NB100 small laptop flies in performance terms, the standard 1.6GHz Intel Atom processor coping without trouble. The 512MB of memory is also adequate for most uses. Storage space is provided in the form of a traditional mechanical hard drive – it’s not as robust or power-efficient as a flash drive, but it does offer a more capacious 80GB. Despite the bulky battery sticking out of the rear of the machine, battery life was merely average, at around 3 hours. That said, Toshiba is keen to make an example of the battery location being part of the design – and the fact it protrudes makes it easier to grip with a single hand. We’re not so sure – it looks to us more like there’s simply no space left to put a battery of that size.

Features in this small laptop include an integrated webcam, three USB ports, a multi-format card reader and a VGA-out port. 802.11b/g Wi-Fi and an Ethernet adapter are also built-in as standard.

With its mini-me styling, comprehensive software suite and easy to use operating system, it’s impossible to dislike the NB100 small laptop. Now some of its rivals are concentrating solely on larger, 10.2-inch Netbooks, it’s a refreshing change to see a return to the original form-factor, and this is a machine you can truly take anywhere. It’s worth having a go if you can, however, as some users will definitely find the small keyboard too cramped. Other than that, it’s an excellent effort, and one that comes highly recommended.

Acer currently has a big investment in the small laptop market. Recently, Acer came out with a 10 inch version of their Aspire One version of Netbooks. With a low price tag, anyone can afford their very own Netbook. While the Acer Aspire One is not the best Netbook on the market, you get a
lot of bang for you buck. The Acer Aspire One comes loaded with everything you could need in a Netbook.

Acer has put the new Atom processor inside the Aspire One. The Atom processor runs at 1.6Ghz and uses a very small amount of power. While this 1.6Ghz processor might not sound fast to you, it can get the job done. You can surf the web, have iTunes running in the background, and install a program with no noticeable performance loss. The Acer Aspire One 10 inch comes with 1GB of RAM standard, thou you can bump it up to 2GB if you want to. The 1GB of RAM seems to do its job just fine.

The Aspire One comes with a 160GB hard drive, which is plenty of space for small laptops. Windows XP comes standard on the Aspire One now, it used to be available with Linux. One of the only problems with the specs of the Aspire One is the Graphics Card, it only comes with an integrated graphics card. The Intel Graphics Accelerator 950 can play videos and DVDs just fine, but don’t expect to play any graphic intensive games on this Netbook. It comes with a very nice 10 inch LCD screen, screen measures 10 inches wide and 8 inches tall. The whole Netbook weighs about 1kg.
The Acer Aspire One has both a headphone jack and a microphone jack. Which is perfect if you want to use the web-cam that comes standard on this Netbook. The Aspire features 3 USB slots and a multi card reader, which can be used to upload pictures from your digital camera. Of course the Aspire One also has a wireless card and an Ethernet 802.11 b/g. The Acer Aspire One could have really benefited from a Blue-tooth connection, it would have made some things a lot easier.
