REVIEW
Sony continue their production of high quality products with the stylish Sony Vaio M Series. This netbook series has proved to be a huge seller already and the M13M1E is the biggest of them all. This small laptop is elegant yet simple to use and packed with high spec components.

The first thing to notice on this laptop is the LED display. The screen picture proves to be extremely sharp and of high quality so despite the 10.1 inch screen, so watching movies and videos on this laptop is not an eye sore.

Read Buyer Reviews on Sony Vaio M13M1Esmall-laptops

The Sony Vaio M13M1E comes with a 250GB hard drive, a standard now amongst most netbooks so plenty of room for storing a large number of files. This small laptop has an Intel Atom 1.83 GHz processor and coupled with Windows 7, all of its features can be handled easily. Accessing the internet and being able to handle multiple programs becomes effortless.

The smooth finish makes this an elegant machine and the netbook does not become covered with finger prints easily. The netbook comes with a built in wecbcam allowing you to carry out video calls effortlessly.

The only thing we would suggest would be considering a RAM upgrade after purchasing this small laptop. This will give the laptop the ability to respond even quicker than it does already. We were also slightly unimpressed with the built in speakers, the sound quality proves to be lacking slightly.

Overall this is one of the best netbooks available on the market and as usual Sony have produced another high quality product which will rival any of its competitors.

REVIEW
Samsung’s NC10 raised the bar in the netbook category by providing one of the most usable keyboards and more than 6 hours of battery life. But like all 10-inch netbooks, its smaller form factor had limitations when compared with full-size notebooks. Enter the newest member of the NC family, the Samsung NC20.

This machine has a more spacious 12-inch display and a full-size keyboard, which makes it look more like a traditional notebook than any other netbook to date. Other than its screen size, the biggest difference between the NC20 and other netbooks is that this one is powered by VIA’s Nano U2250 processor and Chrome9 HC3 integrated graphics, as opposed to Intel’s Atom CPU and integrated graphics.

The NC20 is not as powerful or thin as premium ultraportables, but it provides adequate performance and a good deal for those willing to pay extra for a bigger screen and keyboard. The Samsung NC20 shares the NC10’s design. Its rounded lid sports an identical matte cover. Surrounding the edges of the netbook is a silver trim complemented with glowing blue and reddish orange status lights on the front edge, which project a futuristic aura. A blue glowing power button is on the rounded right hinge.samsung-nc20-netbook

The Samsung NC20 is larger than other 12-inch systems—including its closest competitor, the Dell Inspiron Mini 12—and higher-end 12-inch ultraportables such as the Lenovo ThinkPad X200. At 11.5 x 8.5 x 1.2 inches, the NC20 is thicker than the Mini 12 by 0.4 inches. It is also heavier than your average 2.8-pound netbook, tipping the scales at 3.4 pounds with its standard six-cell battery. While we couldn’t toss this machine into a purse as with the NC10, the NC20 slid into a shoulder bag without a problem. The expanded chassis allows the NC20 to house a full-size keyboard, up from the 93 percent–size keyboard on the NC10; however, the touch and feel of the keys are the same on both. The raised keys provide nice tactile feedback and were comfortable for long typing stints, and there are no spacing issues like those of many netbooks on the market: the right Shift key is full size and directly below the Enter key.

However, we were puzzled as to why Samsung decided to keep the arrow keys and the function keys slightly smaller than the rest, given the extra space on the deck. Also renovated is the touchpad, a marked improvement over the trackpad on the NC10. The mouse button, while longer, remains a single rocker bar and lacks a divot to separate the left and right sides.

The scrolling bar was useful for moving through long Web pages. The NC20 houses the same ports as the NC10, including three USB 2.0 ports, a 3-in-1 memory card reader, mic and headphone jacks, a VGA port, and an Ethernet port. We would have liked to see the extra space used to accommodate an ExpressCard slot for adding a mobile broadband modem card and/or an HDMI port.

Finding the Perfect Small Laptop / Netbook

Small Laptops Guide have put together some info on helping you find the perfect netbook or small laptop.

Firstly, lets discuss, “What is a small laptop / netbook?”

A netbook or small laptop is a smaller, low priced, less powered, laptop computer. They are great for surfing the web, checking email, working on word documents. They do a lot more than this, but this makes up 90% of what most people use a laptop for anyway. Netbooks are becoming increasingly popular with all the big manufacturers from Dell to Lenovo to HP getting in on the market. There is a flood of small laptops available on the market nowadays, this can prove to be a little confusing. So how do you pick which is the right small laptop for you?

Small Laptops Guide will discuss the important specifications to look for when buying the perfect small laptop. In order to get the info on the specifications, we would recommend looking at reviews of particular machines before going ahead and purchasing. From a review you can pick up important details which can help you make decisions when buying. Our site has a list of reviews from all the main manufacturers so have a look and make a note of the important specifications of each machine so that you can compare easily.

What are the important specifications to look out for? We have listed them below:

1. Processor

Look out for the Intel Atom Processor 1.6GHZ, most small laptops have these as standard. They are specifically made for netbooks and can run Windows XP.

2. Hard Drive

In the case of hard drive, more is better. Look out for Solid State Drives, with more than 15GB of space. Some of the newer models have up to 80GB so you can easily install programs and have plenty of files on there.

3. Operating System

Most of the netbooks and small laptops on the market today give an option of Windows or Linux as standard operating systems. For the majority of users, Windows is the preferred platform, although Linux machines tend to be cheaper and you are much less likely to get a virus.

4. Screen Size

Around 9 to 10 inches is a good size for your netbook, but this is often down to personal preference. Some people prefer portability whilst others prefer a slightly larger screen size.

5. Battery Life

More is better. A minimum battery life for your small laptop should be 4 hours at the least.

6. Price

Around £300 or $500 is a good average price you should expect to pay.

If you are interested in buying a small laptop for yourself, Small Laptops Guide has teamed up with Amazon to provide you with the best and latest small laptops available to buy.

Coming Soon – Sony Vaio W Series

Sony is set to release the new W series to compete with the latest small laptops in the market today. The Sony Vaio W is based around the same Intel Atom N280 Processor which is used in many other netbooks. It also has a similar 10 inch screen. However, it differs from the rest when it comes to screen resolution.

The Sony Vaio W has a screen resolution of 1,366 x 768 pixels, which means that more of a website can be fitted on the screen and the users will have to scroll less than on the small laptops of its competitors. Sony aims to use this and the large touch panel to promote this laptop computer. The touch panel on the Sony Vaio W is almost the same size as one on most conventional laptops.

Sony have stated that they are aiming this small laptop at light users and this is an entry level model. Sony also have another smaller netbook on the market, the Sony Vaio P Series which is also reviewed by small laptops guide. The W series, however, is larger than the 8 inch P Series and Sony have stated that each of the two are aimed at different consumers.

With a global decline in PC sales, the only segment of the computer market showing growth is in the sales of small laptops as they are affordable and compact – perfect for basic users of computers. Read our article on Why Small Laptops.sony vaio w

The Sony Vaio W Series comes with 1GB RAM memory, a 160GB hard drive, and weighs only 2.6 lbs. There will also be the option to upgrade the memory by a  further 2GB. The other main selling point is the keyboard, with 86% size of a normal keyboard, typing is expected to be a lot easier than other small laptops available. The Vaio W is 1.3 inches thick and will be availabel in colours of White, Brown and Pink. This small laptop is due for release in August and is expected to be offered at a price of around £400.

Small Laptops Guide will be adding a full review soon.

Toshiba NB100

PRICE
Approximately £250

REVIEW
With over 20 machines available, it’s fair to say the netbook party is in full swing, but it’s still missing one or two of the big players. Toshiba is no longer one of them, having recently launched the NB100, and it’s definitely a case of better late than never. The NB100 is an 8.9-inch Netbook weighing in at 1.1kg, and looks little larger than the diminutive Eee PC. Where the Eee, and many of its compatriots, look toy-like – earning scorn from those with shiny and ultra-expensive ultraportables – the tiny Toshiba looks like a bona-fida miniature laptop.

The back of the screen is glossy black – look very closely and you’ll see it features subtle flecks of blue. The inside of the machine is a mix of matt black plastics with gun-metal grey highlights. The overall look is simple, and similar in style to larger Toshiba laptops. Part of the reason it looks better than most netbooks is because the display stretches right to the edges of the surrounding plastics – where many of its rivals feature thick and unsightly bezels around their screens.

The panel itself is excellent. The 1024 x 600 pixel resolution is standard for a netbook, but at the lower end of the size spectrum it’s perfectly adequate. The panel features a glossy finish which results in vibrant and deep colours, helped by LED backlighting.

Unsurprisingly considering the NB100’s size, the keyboard is a love it or loath it affair. It’s small, similar in style to the original Eee PC 701′s, but a little bit easier to use. Those with large hands should definitely try it first, but once you get accustomed to it it’s no worse than most netbooks.
The touchpad takes up most of the space beneath the keyboard, leaving little space for the mouse buttons. They’re predictably small, but we didn’t have any problem with them. The pad itself is ultra-responsive, making the most of its teeny dimensions. Toshiba has also crammed in a scroll bar on the right, and the whole lot works really rather well.

One of the most impressive features is the interface – provided you opt for the Linux OS rather than Windows XP. Those willing to abandon their prejudices about Linux, and the geektastic connotations, will find a comprehensive suite of built-in applications, all compatible with the software you’re already accustomed to. PDFs, Word, Excel and PowerPoint files can all be accessed with ease, and it represents huge value for monetoshiba-nb100y in comparison to the more expensive XP model.

The Toshiba NB100 small laptop flies in performance terms, the standard 1.6GHz Intel Atom processor coping without trouble. The 512MB of memory is also adequate for most uses. Storage space is provided in the form of a traditional mechanical hard drive – it’s not as robust or power-efficient as a flash drive, but it does offer a more capacious 80GB. Despite the bulky battery sticking out of the rear of the machine, battery life was merely average, at around 3 hours. That said, Toshiba is keen to make an example of the battery location being part of the design – and the fact it protrudes makes it easier to grip with a single hand. We’re not so sure – it looks to us more like there’s simply no space left to put a battery of that size.

Features in this small laptop include an integrated webcam, three USB ports, a multi-format card reader and a VGA-out port. 802.11b/g Wi-Fi and an Ethernet adapter are also built-in as standard.

With its mini-me styling, comprehensive software suite and easy to use operating system, it’s impossible to dislike the NB100 small laptop. Now some of its rivals are concentrating solely on larger, 10.2-inch Netbooks, it’s a refreshing change to see a return to the original form-factor, and this is a machine you can truly take anywhere. It’s worth having a go if you can, however, as some users will definitely find the small keyboard too cramped. Other than that, it’s an excellent effort, and one that comes highly recommended.

REVIEW
Acer currently has a big investment in the small laptop market. Recently, Acer came out with a 10 inch version of their Aspire One version of Netbooks. With a low price tag, anyone can afford their very own Netbook. While the Acer Aspire One is not the best Netbook on the market, you get a
lot of bang for you buck. The Acer Aspire One comes loaded with everything you could need in a Netbook.

Acer has put the new Atom processor inside the Aspire One. The Atom processor runs at 1.6Ghz and uses a very small amount of power. While this 1.6Ghz processor might not sound fast to you, it can get the job done. You can surf the web, have iTunes running in the background, and install a program with no noticeable performance loss. The Acer Aspire One 10 inch comes with 1GB of RAM standard, thou you can bump it up to 2GB if you want to. The 1GB of RAM seems to do its job just fine.

The Aspire One comes with a 160GB hard drive, which is plenty of space for small laptops. Windows XP comes standard on the Aspire One now, it used to be available with Linux. One of the only problems with the specs of the Aspire One is the Graphics Card, it only comes with an integrated graphics card. The Intel Graphics Accelerator 950 can play videos and DVDs just fine, but don’t expect to play any graphic intensive games on this Netbook. It comes with a very nice 10 inch LCD screen, screen measures 10 inches wide and 8 inches tall. The whole Netbook weighs about 1kg.
The Acer Aspire One has both a headphone jack and a micacer-aspire-onerophone jack. Which is perfect if you want to use the web-cam that comes standard on this Netbook. The Aspire features 3 USB slots and a multi card reader, which can be used to upload pictures from your digital camera. Of course the Aspire One also has a wireless card and an Ethernet 802.11 b/g. The Acer Aspire One could have really benefited from a Blue-tooth connection, it would have made some things a lot easier. The keyboard on the this Netbook is small, but is still comfortable enough to write with.

The Acer Aspire One is the perfect mini laptop to be used as a small business laptop or for a student on the go. With the amount of space available on the hard drive you can store all of your photos, mp3s, and school/work stuff. The size of the Aspire One makes it easy to carry in a small bag or purse. This Netbook will turn heads at your local coffee shop. I constantly have people come up to me and ask me what it is. This Netbook both looks and preforms well. If you have been in the market for a Netbook but you where waiting for them to drop in price, now is the time to buy one. The Acer Aspire One 10 inch Netbook is affordable, performs well, and looks very good.

How To Buy A Small Laptop

Today’s laptops range from large widescreen heavy laptops, to lightweight small cheap laptops. If you have ever shopped to buy a laptop then you know that size is only one of the factors to consider. Often laptops are built to a buyer’s specific needs, so its important to try and find the laptop that suits your needs. If you need a high spec machine to act as a desktop pc replacement for gaming or for managing complex software or programs, then one of the larger laptops available on the market would be for you. If you need a small low priced laptop computer with extreme portability for carrying out small tasks like videos, music and internet surfing with some word processing too then a small laptop or netbook would be the ideal purchase.

Before shopping for a laptop you should consider how and where it will be used. If your primary goal is to get some word processing done whilst staying on top of your emails then a small laptop would be for you. One of the most important factors to consider is the CPU which determines how well the laptop performs. Another important factor to consider is memory or RAM, the more memory installed the better it will perform. Upgrading memory on a laptop is trickier than on a desktop so try and find a laptop with plenty of memory pre installed.

The screen size of your small laptop is an important consideration. Laptop screens continue to get bigger and at the same time get smaller. 10″ or 11″ screens are a good size for small laptops and desktop replacement pcs offer displays up to 18 inches. Remember that a laptop’s screen only looks as good where you want to use it. Many small laptops screens look sharp on shop shelves thanks to extra glossy coatings but when you try and use them outdoors or in public places like coffhp-mini-note-2133ee shops the screens can be difficult to see, so keep in mind not only how you want to use your netbook but also where you are planning to use it. It is always recommended to check the internet for reviews on a particular laptop before going ahead to purchase.

When buying a small laptop try also to get a large hard drive. Many small laptops have 120 GB hard drives which allow storage of plenty of files and information. If you plan to work with spreadsheets, databases or digital photos then opt for a larger hard drive. When dealing with any portable laptop battery life is key. You should check the manufacturer’s specifications. It can also be worth investing in a higher capacity battery for users who don’t have access to a power outlet regularly.

Though you can get accustomed to a particular keyboard it is still a good idea to try before you buy, especially when purchasing a small laptop. Also check that the laptop has full wireless capabilities and ethernet access to wired connection sources. You should also check the number and location of USB 2.0 ports. Most laptops have between 2 and 6. If you want to connect an external drive or digital camcorder look for a firewire port.

Many sellers allow you to custom build a machine so use these steps to buy the best small laptop as they will give you control. Its important to remember that only some of the components are upgradeable whilst others are permanent once they have been installed at the factory, so take your time and buy what you need. If you are interested in purchasing a new small laptop then visit our buy small laptops page.
