With over 20 machines available, it’s fair to say the netbook party is in full swing, but it’s still missing one or two of the big players. Toshiba is no longer one of them, having recently launched the NB100, and it’s definitely a case of better late than never. The NB100 is an 8.9-inch Netbook weighing in at 1.1kg, and looks little larger than the diminutive Eee PC. Where the Eee, and many of its compatriots, look toy-like – earning scorn from those with shiny and ultra-expensive ultraportables – the tiny Toshiba looks like a bona-fida miniature laptop.

The back of the screen is glossy black – look very closely and you’ll see it features subtle flecks of blue. The inside of the machine is a mix of matt black plastics with gun-metal grey highlights. The overall look is simple, and similar in style to larger Toshiba laptops. Part of the reason it looks better than most netbooks is because the display stretches right to the edges of the surrounding plastics – where many of its rivals feature thick and unsightly bezels around their screens.

The panel itself is excellent. The 1024 x 600 pixel resolution is standard for a netbook, but at the lower end of the size spectrum it’s perfectly adequate. The panel features a glossy finish which results in vibrant and deep colours, helped by LED backlighting.

Unsurprisingly considering the NB100’s size, the keyboard is a love it or loath it affair. It’s small, similar in style to the original Eee PC 701′s, but a little bit easier to use. Those with large hands should definitely try it first, but once you get accustomed to it it’s no worse than most netbooks.
The touchpad takes up most of the space beneath the keyboard, leaving little space for the mouse buttons. They’re predictably small, but we didn’t have any problem with them. The pad itself is ultra-responsive, making the most of its teeny dimensions. Toshiba has also crammed in a scroll bar on the right, and the whole lot works really rather well.

One of the most impressive features is the interface – provided you opt for the Linux OS rather than Windows XP. Those willing to abandon their prejudices about Linux, and the geektastic connotations, will find a comprehensive suite of built-in applications, all compatible with the software you’re already accustomed to. PDFs, Word, Excel and PowerPoint files can all be accessed with ease, and it represents huge value for money in comparison to the more expensive XP model.

The Toshiba NB100 small laptop flies in performance terms, the standard 1.6GHz Intel Atom processor coping without trouble. The 512MB of memory is also adequate for most uses. Storage space is provided in the form of a traditional mechanical hard drive – it’s not as robust or power-efficient as a flash drive, but it does offer a more capacious 80GB. Despite the bulky battery sticking out of the rear of the machine, battery life was merely average, at around 3 hours. That said, Toshiba is keen to make an example of the battery location being part of the design – and the fact it protrudes makes it easier to grip with a single hand. We’re not so sure – it looks to us more like there’s simply no space left to put a battery of that size.

Features in this small laptop include an integrated webcam, three USB ports, a multi-format card reader and a VGA-out port. 802.11b/g Wi-Fi and an Ethernet adapter are also built-in as standard.

With its mini-me styling, comprehensive software suite and easy to use operating system, it’s impossible to dislike the NB100 small laptop. Now some of its rivals are concentrating solely on larger, 10.2-inch Netbooks, it’s a refreshing change to see a return to the original form-factor, and this is a machine you can truly take anywhere. It’s worth having a go if you can, however, as some users will definitely find the small keyboard too cramped. Other than that, it’s an excellent effort, and one that comes highly recommended.

Acer currently has a big investment in the small laptop market. Recently, Acer came out with a 10 inch version of their Aspire One version of Netbooks. With a low price tag, anyone can afford their very own Netbook. While the Acer Aspire One is not the best Netbook on the market, you get a
lot of bang for you buck. The Acer Aspire One comes loaded with everything you could need in a Netbook.

Acer has put the new Atom processor inside the Aspire One. The Atom processor runs at 1.6Ghz and uses a very small amount of power. While this 1.6Ghz processor might not sound fast to you, it can get the job done. You can surf the web, have iTunes running in the background, and install a program with no noticeable performance loss. The Acer Aspire One 10 inch comes with 1GB of RAM standard, thou you can bump it up to 2GB if you want to. The 1GB of RAM seems to do its job just fine.

The Aspire One comes with a 160GB hard drive, which is plenty of space for small laptops. Windows XP comes standard on the Aspire One now, it used to be available with Linux. One of the only problems with the specs of the Aspire One is the Graphics Card, it only comes with an integrated graphics card. The Intel Graphics Accelerator 950 can play videos and DVDs just fine, but don’t expect to play any graphic intensive games on this Netbook. It comes with a very nice 10 inch LCD screen, screen measures 10 inches wide and 8 inches tall. The whole Netbook weighs about 1kg.
The Acer Aspire One has both a headphone jack and a microphone jack. Which is perfect if you want to use the web-cam that comes standard on this Netbook. Smalllaptopsguide.com would definitely give this HP laptop a 5 star rating amongst its competitors. Whilst being sturdy, the HP is a very high spec PC, as good as any other larger sized laptop and the battery life of four hours is also more than adequate.

With the Asus Eee dominating the small laptop sector, HP wants to bully its way in to the mindset of travellers packing light with a mini notebook of its own. Weighing in at just 1.27kg, sporting a glossy 8.9-inch screen and only 33mm thick the HP 2133 Mini-Note is small but solid.

Compared to the Asus Eee PC, it’s wider and heavier, but the same depth and thickness. It’s also considerably sturdier and nowhere near as flimsy.

That extra width benefits mainly the keyboard with the HP mini-note small laptop sporting a QWERTY keyboard that is 92% the size of a full-size offering. It’s clear that the extra size offered here makes typing considerably easier than the Eee. At 92%, keys are virtually full size and the keyboard is laid out as standard offering no surprises.

As with most laptop keyboards the F keys double up as shortcuts and you’re able to set screen brightness, as well as control volume all at the press of two buttons.

Above the keyboard is the glossy 8.9-inch screen that sports a resolution up to 1280 x 768. Slightly over-reflective, certainly out in the sun, this resolution also suffers from being small meaning you’ll have to strain your eyes to see what is going on. For us, we preferred running it at 1024 x 768. There is also an integrated 1.3 megapixel webcam.

Either side of the keyboard are the notebook’s speakers in a similar arrangement to the Asus Eee 7-inch screen model. Sound, given the size, is surprisingly good, offering a well-rounded sound on the range of music and video that we listened to.

Below the keyboard is a tiny trackpad (3 x 6cm). While widescreen to emulate the display, the small size means it’s almost impossible to use. More confusing is that the left and right buttons have been moved to either side of the trackpad rather than below. It might sound petty, but we still can’t get used to it and our recommendation would be to get yourself a laptop mouse ASAP if you plan do use the pointer to any degree of normality. Luckily you can turn it off to stop accidental use.

When it comes to connections there aren’t masses but enough to get you out of trouble. Being so small there obviously isn’t a CD or DVD drive, however you do get a PC Express card slot alongside an SD card reader, two USB sockets, an Ethernet socket and VGA out so you can plug it in to a monitor so you can see what you are doing in the office. There is also a hard button for wireless connectivity so you can easily turn Wi-Fi on and off.

Inside and compared to the Eee’s specs the HP 2133 Mini-Note will run around it in circles. Sporting a 1.2GHz Via C7-M ULV processor this isn’t the fastest machine on the block but certainly enough to do remote working, checking emails, writing documents and surfing the web. Strangely you won’t be able to get the 1.6GHz version as offered in the US.

Memory is upgradable to 2048MB and the system we had shipped with 1790MB of DDR2, 667MHz, although the standard configuration is 1GB.

The biggest difference to the Eee is the hard drive. A whopping 120GB model compared to the Asus 900 Windows XP 12GB model means this is a fully-fledged laptop for storing media on the go and means you won’t be having to worry about storage issues. It also means you can effectively store movies on the HP 2133 Mini-Note and negates the need for a DVD drive even further.

The system comes with either Linux or Windows Vista Business operating systems depending on what you need and the price varies accordingly. Rather than follow Asus’ model and offer the same price point but with varying hardware specs. HP will simply charge you an £85 premium for Vista bringing the HP 2133 mini-note up to a non-budget £385.

Battery life again depends on what you are doing, however without a CD/DVD drive to burn through it, it’s considerably longer than you might expect. There are two battery options for the mini-note, a three- or six-cell option. We had a unit with the six-cell battery and this is large enough to raise the laptop at an angle. Aside from giving us around 4 hours of charge it also makes the keyboard slightly easier to use. Although it has to be noted it means the design isn’t flush on the backside of the laptop.

The Samsung NC10 can only be described as a superb machine. As far as small laptops go this is one of the if not THE best all round small laptop on the market today. With an affordable price, ease of use and high specification smalllaptopsguide.com highly recommend this product. It sports an all colour (white or black available) design which is very clean and minimal.

The body comes with smooth surfaces and rounded edges which gives it a very nice feel. The Samsung NC10 offers a nice mix of portability, power, style and endurance. The port placement is well thought and nice and the overall positioning of the status indicators and the buttons is nice. The build quality is very nice too. It can easily withstand minor jolts without complaints. The shock resistance is however less as it has a normal hard drive and not a solid state drive. The body mainly made of plastic feels sturdy and durable. The Samsung NC10 sports a nice 10.2″ display which supports a native resolution on 1024 x 600 pixels. The display quality is nice and crisp. The brightness and contrast are almost perfect and the image reproduction nice. The display isn’t glossy which means better direct sunlight legibility, and the vertical and horizontal viewing angles are decent too, allowing an audience of about 3-4.

The Samsung NC10 also comes with a 1.3 MP webcam which has nice quality. The built in microphone also works good as expected. The speakers are located at the bottom of the laptop and produce clear, loud sound. The sound quality is decent and is good enough for serious music playback. The keyboard on first look, seems very similar to other small laptops available to buy. It is very spacious and is about 94% the size of a regular laptop keyboard. The key positioning and spacing is almost perfect. The keys offer superb tactile feedback and the key travel is nice. It is the best among all ultraportable keyboards, a blessing for touch typists. The keyboard feels superb, we would give it full marks. The touchpad is located just below the keyboard, and it is a bit too short for comfort. The horizontal length is adequate though. The touchpad is very responsive and has good sensitivity too. The surface is smooth allowing for nice navigation capability. There is a single long touchpad button below the touchpad which can be clicked on the left or right to indicate the left or right click respectively. The buttons offer nice feedback.

The touchpad is a Synaptics one, and hence supports some basic multitouch gestures which is expected to expand more in the near future. The touchpad also sports a vertical scroller on the right of the touchpad which is very useful when scrolling through long documents or web pages. The Samsung NC10 sports exactly the same configuration as any other netbook in that range – a Intel Atom N270 clocked at 1.6 GHz (with 512 KB L2 cache) , a 120 GB HDD at 5400 RPM, 1 GB DDR2 RAM, the graphics department is powered by the reliable old Intel GMA 950 offering 64 MB of VRAM. This specification is capable of handling all basic and casual / office tasks and can also handle multimedia playback. It can also manage light games at playable settings. The performance is more or less the same as other notebooks in its class. Performance shouldn’t be a deciding factor when you choose between different notebooks in the ultraportable category as they perform very similarly, what counts more are the other factors. The Samsung NC10 sports a whole range of expansion ports including 3 USB ports, Ethernet, Headphone and Microphone in, VGA out and a 3 in 1 and SD Card Reader. It also comes with built in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth with EDR. The Wi-Fi reception is nice. The Samsung NC10 distances itself from the rest of the netbook crowd totally when it comes to battery life. It comes with a very powerful 6 cell battery by default which can power the Samsung NC10 for about 7.5 hours on a single charge with moderate usage. Not once did the battery life go below a minimum of 4 hours even with heavy usage. The battery life is simply amazing and is the number one reason why one should opt for the Samsung NC10 instead of the other notebooks.
