The Sony Vaio M13M1E comes with a 250GB hard drive, a standard now amongst most netbooks so plenty of room for storing a large number of files. This small laptop has an Intel Atom 1.83 GHz processor and coupled with Windows 7, all of its features can be handled easily. Accessing the internet and being able to handle multiple programs becomes effortless.

The smooth finish makes this an elegant machine and the netbook does not become covered with finger prints easily. The netbook comes with a built in wecbcam allowing you to carry out video calls effortlessly.

The only thing we would suggest would be considering a RAM upgrade after purchasing this small laptop. This will give the laptop the ability to respond even quicker than it does already. We were also slightly unimpressed with the built in speakers, the sound quality proves to be lacking slightly.

Overall this is one of the best netbooks available on the market and as usual Sony have produced another high quality product which will rival any of its competitors.

Coming Soon – Sony Vaio W Series

Sony is set to release the new W series to compete with the latest small laptops in the market today. The Sony Vaio W is based around the same Intel Atom N280 Processor which is used in many other netbooks. It also has a similar 10 inch screen. However, it differs from the rest when it comes to screen resolution.

The Sony Vaio W has a screen resolution of 1,366 x 768 pixels, which means that more of a website can be fitted on the screen and the users will have to scroll less than on the small laptops of its competitors. Sony aims to use this and the large touch panel to promote this laptop computer. The touch panel on the Sony Vaio W is almost the same size as one on most conventional laptops.

Sony have stated that they are aiming this small laptop at light users and this is an entry level model. Sony also have another smaller netbook on the market, the Sony Vaio P Series which is also reviewed by small laptops guide. The W series, however, is larger than the 8 inch P Series and Sony have stated that each of the two are aimed at different consumers.

With a global decline in PC sales, the only segment of the computer market showing growth is in the sales of small laptops as they are affordable and compact – perfect for basic users of computers. Read our article on Why Small vaio w

The Sony Vaio W Series comes with 1GB RAM memory, a 160GB hard drive, and weighs only 2.6 lbs. There will also be the option to upgrade the memory by a  further 2GB. The other main selling point is the keyboard, with 86% size of a normal keyboard, typing is expected to be a lot easier than other small laptops available. The Vaio W is 1.3 inches thick and will be availabel in colours of White, Brown and Pink. This small laptop is due for release in August and is expected to be offered at a price of around £400.

Small Laptops Guide will be adding a full review soon.

Sony Vaio VGN-TT11M/N

Price: Approximately £1200
Size: 11.1 inches
Weight: 1.29 kg
Battery Life: Up To 10 Hours
Processor Speed: Dual Core 1.2 GHz
Hard Drive: 120 GB

This small laptop is super portable with an ultra sleek and sophisticated profile, the TT series is the ultimate mobile office. It provides you with everything you need to do business wherever you are. The chassis measures just 200mm x 279mm and is 23.5mm deep at its thinnest point. Being made from carbon fibre means the whole device weighs only 1.32kg. The lid’s 4mm thickness means the whole screen can bend and flex rather worryingly, but the carbon fibre feels completely rugged so, although we wouldn’t want to stress test it too much by flinging it around by the lid, normal usage shouldn’t cause any problems.

Inside the compact casing of this mini laptop is an Intel Core 2 Duo processor running at 1.2GHz, 4GB of DDR3 RAM, a Mobile Intel Series 4 graphics card, a 160GB Sata hard drive and a DVD rewriter optical drive. The inclusion of an optical drive, combined with the use of a full Core 2 Duo processor and a hefty amount of memory, is what really sets the TT apart from any similarly sized competitors.

Given the rest of the high specifications we were a little disappointed to see a base level Intel vaiographics chip that shares system memory but, given the space and heat issues the engineers will have been dealing with, and the types of applications the target audience will be using, we can understand why Sony chose that route.

There is the usual array of USB ports, a LAN port, 0.3-megapixel webcam, memory card readers and VGA output. There is also an ExpressCard slot and HDMI output. Along the front of the TT is a discreet collection of buttons for volume and mute, optical drive eject, Wi-Fi on/off and a user definable short-cut key.

As well as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, the TT includes a built-in 3G modem to make sure users can connect at any time if they desperately need to check a vital email or update their Twitter feed.

The 11.1in screen is impressive to behold, and Sony has used its X-Black technology to make sure nothing hinders the bright vibrant colours or sharpness of the display. Although the screen tops at a resolution of 1,366 x 768, there is an HDMI port which can provide full 1,080 HD output.

Although the keyboard is slightly smaller than a standard sized keyboard, the layout and the isolated keys make typing, even at speed and for extended durations, no problem at all.

Sony Vaio TZ190N

The VAIO TZ notebook features an 11.1″ WXGA widescreen display with Sony’s original XBRITE-HiColor LCD technology with white LED backlight. Sony’s innovative backlight technology offers lower power consumption for improved battery life and provides incredibly high brightness levels, amplifying colors and creating clear, crisp pictures that truly “pop” off the LCD. The result: an amazing 72% color saturation for deeper blacks, brighter whites, true-to-sony-vaio-tz190nlife color and razor-sharp detail. And, with the anti-reflective coating to minimize reflection while providing a wide viewing angle, you’ll enjoy a beautifully clear image from almost any angle. It’s the ideal way to present your work or watch a DVD when you’re on the go. The VAIO TZ small laptop features a thoughtfully redesigned keyboard that showcases an extreme attention to detail. Designed for ease of use and a smart, sophisticated look, the individual keys are slightly raised above an attractive piano-black bezel layer producing a user-friendly touch and feel to the keyboard that creates an improved typing experience. In addition, an extra support layer has been added below the bezel to increase the structural integrity of the keyboard and add stability to the keys, giving them an unwavering up-down motion and making for quieter typing. Details like these not only enhance the look and feel of the TZ notebook, but also reveal the design intelligence and innovation that only Sony can offer. Sony’s innovative power-saving technology combined with Intel Centrino Duo processor technology efficiently manages power resources to deliver an amazing 4 to 7.5 hours of standard battery life. And for those times when you’ll be on the go all day, rely on the optional large capacity battery for 6 to 11.5 hours of power to get you through.

Sony Vaio VGN-P11Z

Price: Approximately £700
Size: 8 inches
Weight: 0.64 kg
Battery Life: Up to 3 Hours
Processor Speed: 1.3 GHz
Hard Drive: 60 GB

Small Laptops Guide have carried out all the hard work for YOU in finding recommended, secure, online retailers at the best prices. We provide a variety of sellers so you can compare prices. Simply click on the product image below to buy now.

We’re used to seeing feature-packed ultraportables from Sony’s VAIO range, but no recent small laptop has come close to matching the VAIO VGN-P11Z in terms of mobility. Weighing in at just 625g, it’s considerably lighter and more compact than all current Netbooks and ultraportables. Despite this, the quality is excellent, which it has to be to help justify the premium price tag. Available in a range of colours, you’ll find glossy and sturdy plastics in place. At 21mm in depth, it’s also one of the thinnest laptops we’ve seen.

The 8-inch screen is more distinctive than the current crop of Netbooks, with the widest aspect ratio we’ve seen. It features a resolution of 1600 x 768 pixels, with images appearing considerably sharper than even the most expensive ultraportables.

There’s enough space to work with a number of windows open simultaneously, although text and icons may appear too small for some users. With an integrated Intel graphics card, don’t expect great 3D performance. As a pre-production model, we weren’t able to perform benchmark tests, but power promises to match other ultraportables.

Considering its size21s, the keyboard on this machine is outstandingly good. There’s not as much travel as on larger laptops, but the keys are responsive and move with precision. Isolated keys protrude through individual holes in the chassis, offering faultless usability.

There’s no touchpad, however, as the ultra-widescreen layout leaves no space for a palm rest. Instead, the VAIO is controlled via a responsive pointing stick in the centre of the keyboard.

Processing power is the biggest disappointment on this machine. You won’t find a ULV Intel Core 2 Duo processor, but instead an Intel Atom chip – similar to those found in Netbooks. Running at 1.33GHz, it’s backed by 2048MB of memory, offering enough power for office tasks. Storage space comes from a 1.8-inch 60GB hard drive.

The biggest compromise made in the pursuit of the tiny dimensions is a lack of ports. The two USB ports are in keeping with other ultraportable VAIOs, but there’s no display-out, modem or Ethernet connection. Wireless connectivity is more impressive, with both 802.11n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth in place.
